Gary Heller Photography is based in Brooklyn, New York. I grew up with a love for art at an early age. My mother Eleanor is an artist and growing up watching her paint and having her explain to me the process as I looked on was a great influence on me.
I consider myself an artist who uses photography as a medium. Much of my work has been described as having a painterly and/or illustrated look.
My work is most always inspired by light and shadow, shapes and definition as well as character and mood. The term chiaroscuro, which is the artistic use of light and shadow in such a way that brings a three dimensional aspect of the subject to the viewer has been used by friends and peers to describe my work. I also love the term and practice of “peak, shift, effect” which is the exaggeration or amplification of readily identifiable characteristics of a subject, very much the way an artist might draw or paint a caricature of a person or animal. It entertains our eyes and mind quickly, and allows us to lock in on the interesting aspects of a given subject.
My subjects range from urban scapes and urban exploration to portraiture and pinup. Live performances and dance/theater photography is also something I enjoy.
I have exhibited at various galleries throughout New York over the years as well as the Alice Austen House museum, having been a featured artist twice. My work has been published in magazines and books, featured on blogs and webzines and held in private collections throughout the world. I was a resident Artist/spokesperson for Kim Crawford Wines Artist lounge. Grand prize winner of the Historical Ithaca barn survey photo competition. Some of my photographs were used on the set of the ABC television series “V”. My work will be on the cover of ArtTour International magazine, December 2011 edition. Some works of mine will also be involved in a documentary, “Himalaya Song” to be shown at the New York Asia Society in November 2011 and the Sundance Film Festival 2012.
